Jeff Kaiser’s Visit to Uganda

ECHOES Around the World.
Jeff Kaiser, a senior at the Haverford School in Haverford, Pennsylvania and co-president of the school’s Service Board, was yearning to go to Uganda and see first-hand its poverty and its potential. With $8,000 raised in concert with the Agnes Irwin School students at a talent show in the spring of 2006, monies were sent to help different organizations in Uganda.
But Jeff wanted to see Uganda for himself and find ways of continuing to help support the people and projects there.
Nereida Gordon, the Chair of ECHOES, helped Jeff make arrangements with the Rev. David Serunjogi of Uganda, to stay with his family during his three week visit in July 2007. Serunjogi’s house is one of a few that has running water and several hours of electricity a day.

Kaiser traveled to the Trinity Primary School (1200 day students) and to Centenary High School (at 700 boarding students and growing) where he saw first hand the education of Ugandan children who otherwise might not have the opportunity to learn and be cared for by a quality institution.
Jeff, however, spent most of his three weeks painting the soon-to-be opened Double Cure Medical Center that just opened the first of five buildings. Eventually the Center will house a children’s ward, men’s ward, women’s ward, an operating theater and an outpatient building. Kaiser said, “Currently, my major project from this trip is to help them get an ambulance for the clinic.”
An ambulance can be outfitted to serve as a mobile clinic that will provide day-to-day care, immunizations, AIDS and health education talks and dispense mosquito netting to malaria-plagued villages. Jeff is trying to raise the $15,000 to enable the Clinic to purchase a used ambulance.

Jeff is also working with Dr. Joe Bonn at Lankenau Hospital, a board member of ECHOES, and other physicians to obtain medical supplies for the Double Cure Medical Clinic.
Jeff is well on his way to realizing his dream to make life better for many less fortunate than we.
