Centenary 2008 National Examination for Final Year Students
Centenary High School is only 10 years old, growing all the time especially as its reputation grows. In the past when the students have been praised by visitors for their great results they will tell you that next year they are going to do better than last year. They are always striving. I think they realize that they are fortunate because they are getting a good quality education.
As visitors, we are often overwhelmed with the class numbers and the lack of good desks, equipment, sports’ fields and dormitories. It just doesn't look like our version of a successful school. But talk to the students, talk to the teachers and you hear enthusiasm and drive.
In many countries of Africa they follow the British system of national exams. These occur at the end of primary school in what they call P7, at the end of four years of high school, called S4, O or Ordinary level and then after S6 for A or Advanced level. In these exams all students of the country are given the same exam and thus are tested against each other. In 2007 the school achieved amazing results nation wide and place 54th in the country of 3,000 high schools.
This past year Centenary High School students testing at A level produced the top student in their area which would comprise about 50 schools and as a class came in second with their overall results.
With results like these why shouldn't we support these students and find as many scholarships as possible for the needy students to give them an opportunity. This is part of what drives the supporters of ECHOES.
Thank you to those who are part of our team.
